New Years Resolutions 2014

The Holiday season is over and it is the beginning of the new year. For many that means a time to reflect on the past year and make plans for the year to come. New Years resolutions sound like a good idea but don't usually stick around and can leave people feeling deflated. So how does one go about creating change in the new year and make it last? Here are some helpful suggestions:1. Let go of the Past Before making a list of goals and dreams for this upcoming year, take some time to reflect on the past. Unresolved attachements and baggage can make it difficult to move forward. Take a moment to list your accomplishments from the past year and allow yourself to feel happy and proud. Then think about things that you regret or feel negative about and write about them. Notice your feelings and then get rid of the paper either by shredding or burning. According to Sally Kempton in her article out with the old "a process called recapitulation you bring to mind any baggage your carrying and anything that could subtly stand in the way of your intention". Unpack the baggage to make room for the greatness of the coming year! 2. Practice self-reflection After moving beyond from the previous year take stock of the person you want to be. What values to you want to build upon? What kind of life do you want to lead? It is all well and good to grab the standard resolutions like quitting smoking, eating better and losing weight, but is that really going to enhance your life and move you towards the life you want? Take some time to sit and imagine the life you want to lead. What will actually move you closer to that quality of life? 3. Keep it small and simple It can feel exhilirating to come up with a whole list of goals for the new year. However, getting over zealous can lead to frusteration easily when there is't noticeable progress being made. For example, starting with a 5k when you are getting into running instead of jumping straight into that marathon. Focus on smaller, more attainable goals that you can reasonably achieve. As you hit those goals you can build on achievements and continue the growth process. 4. Make it specific When goals are vague it is difficult to measure success. As you evaluate specific goals think about ways to make it easily defined and measurable. If you want to start eating better what does that mean? Are you going to incorporate more veggies in your diet? Or are you going to eat 3-5 vegetables per a day? Outline steps towards the goals that are attainable and have a limit. How will you know if you have accomplished that goal? The more defined the goals are the easier it is to track your progress and celebrate successes. And if none of this suits you.... You may be a person that would like to make changes, is wondering why life isn't going the way you would like, but goal setting has not worked in the past. Perhaps it is the time to approach the new year slightly different. As David Wong states " the key is, I don't want you to focus on something great that you're going to make happen to you ...I want you to purely focus on giving yourself a skill that would make you ever so slightly more interesting and valuable to other people."
